يَنْزِلُ رَبُّنَا تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا حِينَ يَبْقَى ثُلُثُ اللَّيْلِ الْآخِرُ فَيَقُولُ: مَنْ يَدْعُونِي فَأَسْتَجِيبَ لَهُ، مَنْ يَسْأَلُنِي فَأُعْطِيَهُ، مَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُنِي فَأَغْفِرَ لَهُ
Every night, when the last third of the night remains, our Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, descends to the lowest heaven and says: “Is there anyone to invoke Me, that I may respond to him? Is there anyone to ask Me, that I may grant him? Is there anyone asking My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?”

How to Pray Tahajjud ▾
Tahajjud is prayed any time after ʿIshāʾ and before Fajr, ideally in the last third of the night, in units of two rakʿahs with no fixed upper limit — pray as many pairs as you are able.
- Make wuḍūʾ (ablution) and face the qiblah.
- Make a sincere niyyah (intention) to pray Tahajjud for Allah’s sake.
- Open with takbīr (“Allāhu Akbar”), then recite al-Fātiḥah followed by another sūrah.
- Go into rukūʿ (bowing), saying “Subḥāna Rabbiy al-ʿAẓīm”, then rise.
- Prostrate twice (sujūd), saying “Subḥāna Rabbiy al-Aʿlā” in each.
- Complete the second rakʿah, sit for tashahhud and salawāt, then finish with taslīm.
- Repeat in further pairs of rakʿahs as desired, then close the night with Witr (see the ruling below).
- Linger in duʿāʾ, especially once in the last third — this is when supplication is most cherished.

Night prayer is offered two rakʿahs at a time, and the night’s prayers are closed with a single, odd rakʿah of Witr so the total count is odd. Tahajjud should be prayed first, with Witr always performed last — the Prophet ﷺ instructed:
“Make the last of your prayers at night Witr.”
All night prayer should be completed before dawn (Fajr) breaks. The most excellent time is the last third of the night. If you are unsure you will wake up later, it is permissible to pray Witr earlier, right after ʿIshāʾ — but Witr should not then be repeated a second time that same night; any further voluntary rakʿahs afterward are simply prayed without a second Witr.
